Surgery

Wrightsville Beach Pet Hospital is equipped to perform a full range of surgical procedures from routine spays and neuters to mass removals, cystotomies, wound repair and emergency exploratory surgery.   The veterinarians perform surgery in our sterile surgery suite. Each patient under anesthesia receives electronic patient monitoring including ECG and respiratory monitoring. For an additional measure of safety each patient receives and IV Catheter and Fluids during surgery.  We utilize isoflurane inhalant anesthesia.  Pre-anesthetic bloodwork and an Electrocardiogram are performed on surgical patients to screen for potential problems prior to anesthesia. A CO2 Surgical Laser is utilized for many procedures. The laser seals nerve endings as it cuts, thereby reducing pain and the risk of infection.  Pets recovering from anesthesia are closely monitored in our treatment area.  Additionally, each pet is monitored closely by both our staff and the latest in electronic patient monitoring from induction to recovery.

Dentistry

Pets have teeth too! Gum disease is one of the most common problems we find with dogs and cats. This can lead to foul breath, painful teeth, sore throats and various internal health problems. By starting a dental prophylactic program, you can enhance the quality of your pet's life. Gingivitis is one of the major causes of health problems in pets over 3 years of age.  Unlike people, cats and dogs get to sleep through dental procedures!  Since a thorough dental cleaning requires general anesthesia, the doctor evaluates your pet's  pre-surgical electrocardiogram and pre-surgical labwork to assess anesthetic safety.  Additionally, dental patients receive an IV catheter and fluids during their procedure. We use an ultrasonic scaler and spend extra time polishing and applying sealant to help keep those teeth shiny.  We integrate Oravet® by Merial into each dental prophy to help maintain your pet's clean teeth after you leave.

Ultrasonography & Radiology

Ultrasound examination of the abdomen provides us with information about the health of the liver, kidneys, bladder, stomach, intestines, spleen, pancreas, and adrenal glands among others. It is also useful in the diagnosis and management of many types of cancer and infectious diseases.

Our in house radiology service provides immediate diagnostics for critical care patients as well as routine procedures. We  submit radiographs for OFA certification, evaluate hip dysplasia and joint pain, and perform barium series for diagnosis of intestinal blockage.

Preventive Medicine

The best medicine is keeping your pet healthy.  While keeping vaccinations up-to-date is an integral component of animal health, annual physical exams and regular bloodwork are also essential. Our doctors will tailor a program to suit your pet's age and lifestyle.  In addition, heartworm prevention and flea control are important for a healthy, comfortable animal in coastal North Carolina.

Wellness Plans

We offer routine healthcare programs for puppies and kittens which include the basic wellness services (vaccinations, worming, exam, heartworm prevention and flea control) for the first six months along with the laser spay/neuter surgery with pre-surgical bloodwork and IV Catheter to maximize anesthetic safety.  These services are packaged for a flat monthly payment. Please ask our staff for more information on these plans.

Grooming

Whether your pet requires a medicated bath or a day of beauty or qualified staff is at your service.  Our baths include brushing, a nail trim and  a "blow-dry".  We ask that baths be checked-in before 9:00 a.m. We will bath them in the morning and you may pick your friend up in the early afternoon.  This allows enough time for drying and brushing.  Baths are by appointment only.

If your pet requires a haircut, shave down or more specialized grooming, Teresa Anderson, our groomer can help you.  She prefers to speak to clients personally before the first groom.  She requests her grooming appointments arrive by 8:30 a.m. so she can get an early start.  Pets are usually ready by early afternoon.

Boarding

Whether your pet requires accomodations for a day or a week, our veterinarian supervised kennel offers a high quality, indoor, air-conditioned facility. We have 11 individual dog runs. Each run has a ceramic tile floor with sealed grout and a separate drain. Privacy walls between each run keeps pets calmer. Some dogs like to rest on our cots while others prefer faux sheepskin blankets or even the floor! Whether they are here for boarding or just for the day, our canine guests are walked in our fenced yard three times daily. (Twice on Sunday). Additional playtime is available. The 6-foot wooden fence ensures your pet's safety while outside. Dogs romp separately (unless they are from the same family). Dogs are fed the highly digestible Purina CNM EN formula in our kennel.   We are also happy to feed your food.  After 7 nights of boarding dogs receive a complementary bath.

Our sunny cat care center allows our cats to have a room with a view. Cats praise the quiet of our separate cat boarding facility (no noisy dogs!). Chirping bird sounds provide a pleasant background.  Cats dine on Hill's Science Diet Feline Maintenance, or you may bring your cat's preferred food.
